My photo
This blog is an amateur photographer's attempt to show how beautiful the world really is. He is drawn to the colors of nature like a moth to a candle light. What are showcased here are nature's grand display of colors at sunrise and sunset, beautiful beaches and off-the-beaten track locations in his beloved Philippines, waterfalls and some of nature's great sculptures, architectural gems, and other views from around SE Asia that he was fortunate to see at one point.

manila bay: bay of colors

We are all equal, you just have to find the right perspective
famous Manila Bay sunset

Manila Bay undergoes a transformation when the sun dips below the horizon. Its just like a Jekyll and Hyde thing, but this time it goes from ugly to beautiful.

Normally you would see a garbage strewn, oil slick covered bay. The water is far beyond murky, in some parts its almost black. But stay a while and wait for the sunset and your patience may be rewarded with nature's awesome display of colors.

Bay of Gold

As the sun goes down golden hues start to cover the bay. Suddenly the dirty (to put it mildly) water that made you cringed a moment ago is now a sea of gold. Sometimes I wonder whether the oil slick and the murky waters helps in reflecting the colors.

Great Ball of Fire

The hazy smog covered horizon becomes a backdrop deep red orange. Just when you think things could not get more interesting, the sun dips below the low lying clouds, treating you to a classic Manila bay fireball.

Her Colors
saturating colors

But do not leave just yet. The real sunset colors appear a few seconds after the sun finally said good bye. You'll see the colors starting to deepen and get really saturated.

Another Manila Bay Sunset

Suddenly the clouds get painted in a plethora of colors, from deep red to royal blue to striking yellow, in what seems like a defiant stand to prolong the day.

All these transformations happen in a 30-minute window, with final hurrah lingering for just a few seconds. After that the bay goes black to its former self: garbage strewn, oil slick covered, bleak waters.

All photos except the 3rd one (fireball) were taken on the same afternoon.

I had a glimpse of this beauty when I was in Manila too, just that, in the mornings I passed there, all I saw was trash...

ganun talaga sheng, trash sa day time, tapos gandang sandali during sunset, tapos balik walang kwenta na naman :D

Amazing photos!
Manila Bay always display beautiful yet different sunsets everyday of our lives. No sunset photos are always the same...
I remember I have almost identical photo just like what you have captured in the third photo. But as I have just said earlier, no sunset photos are always the same here in Manila Bay.
I wonder when was this series was taken. I bet with typhoons occuring here in our country at weeks interval, there was no beautiful sunset to be had these days. Maybe these photos were taken last summer? Oh, just a wild guess :)

this very short window should remind us how essentially beautiful Manila Bay is, if only all - authorities, businesses, and citizens alike - can put their heads together and work towards bringing back its old 24/7 grandeur. thanks, 'lan.

Very majestic and spectacular. No doubt, still the best place to view sunset is just here in metro manila. Lucky us!

Ganda ng shots mo! ;D

@witsandnuts - yup, I agree with that, pag sunset walang tatalo sa Manila bay

@r-yo - shoot tayo :)

@odette - thanks!

@docgelo - we have to look beyond the floating garbage to appreciate the bay's beauty :D

@Ariel - I hope for the bay sake they'll do that, or we all should do that :D

@Chyng - Lucky us indeed! :)

lovely, lovely sunset! mas romantic siguro kung may beaches pa around the bay. but i'm not complaining, basta maganda pa rin ang sunset diyan sa manila bay no matter kung ano ang itsura na ng lugar. :D

Lantaw said...

@carlotta - sa dumi ng bay malabo ang beach resorts :D. pero that does not stop a lot of people from bathing in manila bay especially during the summer.

i've seen Manila bay sunset several times and each time, my camera didn't do any justice with its beauty but yours...it's another story! Awesome! If only they could clean the bay back to its former cleanliness.

@Marites, sana nga :), pero it would take more than a lifetime

Simply majestic by sunset...wish I had the patience to wait for this time of the day I was there, I was a bit disappointed to see all the floating trash so I left so soon. :) Good to be back here after a long time of absence. Ayo-ayo diha.

@LadyFi - thanks!

@Jenn - I doubt kung may efforts to rehabilitate the bay any time soon :(
