About Me

My photo
This blog is an amateur photographer's attempt to show how beautiful the world really is. He is drawn to the colors of nature like a moth to a candle light. What are showcased here are nature's grand display of colors at sunrise and sunset, beautiful beaches and off-the-beaten track locations in his beloved Philippines, waterfalls and some of nature's great sculptures, architectural gems, and other views from around SE Asia that he was fortunate to see at one point.

rizal : pililla wind farm

Pililla wind turbines at sunset

Standing like white giants on the rolling hills of Pililla, these wind turbines are symbols of clean and sustainable energy source.  They are definitely eye candies too! The place has now become a popular location not just for shooting landscape photos but for model and commercial shoots as well (saw one car commercial)

Folks used to drive past this area of Pililla, some 2 hours away from Metro Manila, without even noticing the nearby hills.  Some cars would probably stop for a basket of mango (there are mango orchards nearby and fruit stalls by the highway) and then proceed onwards to their destination, most probably the scenic coastal town of Real.

Recently, city folks have been driving to Pililla specifically to catch a glimpse of these giant wind turbines. Before Pililla, the only wind farm is Bangui and Burgos in the province of Ilocos Norte - a good 12 hours drive from Manila.

The wind farm is operated by Altenergy Wind One Corp (as of this posting, the wind farm is not yet fully operational). Its 27 towers will provide 54-megawatt of electricity to the Luzon grid.

Each tower is capable of generating 2.5 megawatt of clean and renewable energy, making the wind farm's total capacity a substantial 67.5 megawatts.

tourist attraction

Apart from generating energy, the wind farm has a huge potential of attracting tourists as well.  There are two viewing areas, and even if the access roads are still under construction, I've seen a lot of vehicles heading up the access roads. [As of April 2015, the viewing areas are closed while work on transmission lines is on going. Visitors area not allowed beyond the guard post at the end of each access road]

Apart from tourists, photographers are making a bee line to these towers. There are many good vantage points and general area itself a great place to watch the sun go down. Its an excellent area as well for astrophotography as there is very little light pollution.

As a bonus, you can also get a good view of the sunset over Laguna Lake and with Metro Manila in the background from the second viewing area.

how to get there by private car

  • If you are driving from Manila, the best route is via Antipolo then head down to Tanay (alternative route can be via Binangonan but traffic can be bad).  Follow the Manila East Rd highway heading to Real Quezon. The first access road is just about 2-3 kilometers (on the left side) after you passed the overlooking view point, You can't miss this viewpoint as there are stores there. You won't be able to miss the first access road as well as its a wide gravel road. The second access road is about 5 kilometers further.

how to get there by public transportation

  • If you are coming from Manila, you can ride the Raymond buses bound for Real, Quezon (terminal is in Legarda St, Sampaloc). You can then just get off at the access roads.
  • Alternative is to get a van to Tanay (from Cubao, or from Starmall in Edsa-Shaw, fare is around 70 pesos, travel time is 2-3 hours). From Tanay you can ride a jeep to Pililla (travel time is around 30 minutes). From Pililla you can hire a tricycle to the wind farm.
